STEM WA

MATE part of the Marine Technology Society and STEM WA have just signed a Memorandum of Agreement as a step towards developing a more formal partnership between our two organisations. MATE began its journey as the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center in 1997 and integrated into the Marine Technology Society (MTS) in 2023.

Re-Engineering Australia Foundation Ltd (REA) has successfully managed STEM programs in Australia for over 20 years, and in 2024, STEM WA was formed to continue to promote and develop STEM programs in Western Australia including STEM Racing, (formerly F1 in Schools), Level 1 Mini ROV (only run in WA), Level 2 Large ROV, Level 3 Spatial Design, and Level 4 Submarine Model.

STEM WA is excited about the new direction for the popular Underwater ROV competition in Western Australia becoming aligned with the International MATE ROV Competition and creating new underwater tasks that relate to real world Maritime challenges. Building on the MATE ROV Competition, STEM WA has aligned WA Defence and Maritime Industry challenges to form the 2025 Defence West Underwater Challenge. This will result in our STEM Racing and ROV competitions being aligned with world competition standards, giving WA Students the best opportunities to show case their skills on the world stage. Our Aussie Ranger (formerly Level 2 Large RoV) class will prepare students to prepare for the new MATE ROV Competition Challenges in 2026.

This Memorandum of Agreement with MATE will allow STEM WA to continue to promoting STEM learning, workforce development in maritime skills, problem solving of real-world challenges and global collaboration for a sustainable ocean planet.
