PROJECT INTENT:
Project intent includes the following:
- To have students at this early age become excited about STEM activities and to realise that
STEM is about cross curricular activities, not just maths and science. - Allow students to take their first steps to becoming entrepreneurs as they learn how to
market and promote their ideas and their team.

MEDIA RELEASE FORMS
Supervising teachers are to ensure that media release forms are completed by all students / schools prior to mentoring (if applicable) or before the teams arrive at the event.
COMPETITION
The Mini ROV is a State Competition ONLY. There is no progression to a National Final.
Duty of Care by Schools & Teachers
It is the primary responsibility of any event accredited supervising teacher to administer their school’s duty of care / well-being, relevant to their education system’s guidelines, for all their student team members, throughout the entirety of STEM WA managed events. Any concerns arising during the event in relation to this SHOULD be brought to the attention of the STEM WA Mini ROV Event Director immediately. A school’s Duty of Care cannot be transferred to a 3rd party such as STEM WA.
Standard of Care by STEM WA
STEM WA will do its utmost to administer a high Standard of Care for teachers, students and members of the public through adherence with requirements of Workplace Health & Safety, Risk Management and Child Protection procedures. It will also strive to ensure the judging process is applied fairly and equally to each and every team attending our managed events

STUDENT WORKBOOK:
INNOVATION:
The Level 1 Mini ROV does not have a major focus on engineering design. Students are permitted to innovate in terms of the controlling hand set, positioning of the motors and the wiring but the basic construct of the body of the ROV MUST remain unchanged.
TEAMS:
The Mini ROV Teams may consist of 1 – 3 team members. There is no supporting or affiliate team members permitted in this division.
STUDENT ONLY WORK
All design work, text and scripting for ALL project elements presented for assessment MUST be wholly undertaken and created by the team members and be their own original work. This includes Trade Display and graphic content. The process of assembling the watercraft from manufactured components, purchased components and purchased sub-assemblies MUST be wholly undertaken by the team. The process of ‘finishing’ the water craft MUST be wholly undertaken by the team.
Teachers / Mentors are permitted to support the students in developing their skills in assembly, soldering or wiring.
BUDGET
The following budget needs to be considered for the teams:
- Purchasing ROV Materials
- Competition Fees
- Commitment Fees
- Materials for Marketing display
Competition Fees
This is nominally $50 per team.
Commitment Fees
To ensure that we are using our sponsorship funds wisely, we need to ensure we are catering for those whom attend. To encourage commitment, we request schools pay a commitment fee of $50 if they submit a single team or $100 if they submit multiple teams. If the nominated teams:
- Come to the competition this can be used as credit from the STEM WA store, or
- If the team withdraw after 01 September 26, then the commitment fee will be retained by STEM WA to cover the costs committed for the event
Schools may request consideration by the STEM WA Committee for returning the commitment fee in extenuating circumstances.

Certificate of Participation
In 2026 all students will receive a certificate stating that they participated in the STEM WA Mini ROV program. This will be on the basis that they completed all components of the Mini ROV program, even if they do not make it to a competition.
